Dan Skuta - Raising a Happy Dog

Now that Daniel Skuta is retired from the NFL, he has more time than ever to pursue his personal interests. On any given day, the former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker can be found fishing, hunting, riding his ATV or even honing his photography skills – activities he now gets to enjoy with more energy and focus than ever before.

But one of Dan Skuta’s favorite things to do is spend time with his Pitbull, Kaiya – a happy, healthy canine that brings laughter and love to Skuta’s life every day.
Raising a happy dog, as Skuta knows, isn’t necessarily difficult—though it does take a strong level of commitment.

While every dog has different needs, most young dogs require about:
  • 30 minutes of physical exercise daily.
  • Two feedings a day (with care taken to avoid overfeeding).
  • Between 15-30 minutes of training or obedience every day – activities that can keep the dog occupied while exercising their brain.

Dan Skuta, Former Bengals Player - Managing a Successful Ranch

Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Dan Skuta currently owns and manages a 700-acre recreational ranch – one that offers both hunting parties and corporate gatherings the opportunity to experience the many facets of a real-life Texas ranch.

And as ranch owner, Dan Skuta – who spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals – knows well the challenges that come with managing a guest-friendly ranch environment. Building and maintaining a successful recreational or “dude” ranch involves:

  • Setting up adequate accommodations, those which will house and feed large groups of people comfortably throughout the duration of their stay.

  • Planning activities, such as riding horses, cookouts, overnight campouts and others that provide entertainment and deliver a real-life ranch experience.

  • Planning meals well in advance – something that provides you and your staff the organization needed to please guests and keep them fed consistently and efficiently.

  • Having a “Plan B,” such as backup activities and contingency plans should something go wrong.

Dan Skuta - Running a Profitable Ranch Property

Now retired from the NFL, former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Dan Skuta turns much of his focus on his 700-acre Texas ranch – a property that plays host to a variety of hunting and corporate events every year.

And as the owner of a large ranch property, Daniel Skuta has come to appreciate what it takes not only to manage day-to-day operations, but the work that goes in making it profitable.

Turning a ranch into a producer requires:
  • Matching costs with revenues. By keeping an ever-present eye on the margin between what is spent and what is pulled in every month, you can better predict and adapt to changes in that margin when they come.

  • Plan for the worst. As a ranch manager, you must always ask yourself “what if?” By planning for disaster, you’ll be better protected should it ever hit.

Doing so, as he knows, demands not only a strong work ethic and unrelenting determination, but also:

  • A clearly-defined purpose – one which provides yourself and your team a clear idea of what your brand is and looks to be.
  • A strong customer focus – the idea that the customer is the central aspect of your success and that every action your business takes should be based on their needs.
  • A key strategy – that which allows your business to grow and adapt to ever-changing market conditions when necessary.

Dan Skuta, Former Bengals Linebacker - What Beginner Snowmobilers Should Know

Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker and avid outdoorsman Dan Skuta enjoys a good trip on his snowmobile – the opportunity to experience the wonder of winter and nature up close and personal, as well as to feel the thrill of doing so aboard a fast and powerful machine.

An experienced snowmobiler, Dan Skuta – who played four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals – knows the importance of preparation when it comes to maximizing enjoyment. Before taking that first exciting ride on top of a snowmobile, beginners should:

  • Not be afraid of the throttle. Yes, snowmobiles are powerful machines – but hesitating to utilize the throttle, particularly when needed, can make your first ride frustrating, and can sometimes lead to accidents.
  • Choose the right gear. Staying safe, warm and comfortable is key to an enjoyable ride. Take care to chose proper, well-fitting gear and clothing that will optimize your experience.
