Most Common Defensive Formations in Football
Dan Skuta played on a number of teams throughout his career. But no matter the team he played on—Bengals, Niners, Bears or Jags—Skuta came to recognize the most often used formations that dominate the defensive side of the ball.
Some of more common formations include:
- The 4-3, which features
four down linemen and is most often implemented at the professional level.
- The 3-4, which is typically
used to keep short-passing, ball control offenses in check.
- The 4-4, which includes four linebackers, two cornerbacks and a safety supporting four down linemen.
